9 Colors per Character in DHC v12

In MvC Gave You Two Colors. I Gave Every Button Its Own., we expanded Marvel vs. Capcom from two colors (Punch vs. Kick) to 6 button colors (LP, MP, HP, LK, MK, HK). In X-Men vs. Street Fighter, we pushed CPS-2 all the way to 18 colors per character:

How I made X-Men vs. Street Fighter get 18 Colors per Fighter: 27,648 Bytes Packed into 6,964YouTube ↗

For DHC v12, every character has 9 colors for you to pick:

  • 6 Attack Buttons (LP, MP, HP, LK, MK, HK): Press any single attack button on character select.
  • 3 Start-Button Colors (Start + LP, Start + MP, Start + HP): Hold Start and press a punch button for 3 bonus colors.

How the Final 9 Are Picked

You get two colors for the same fighter and tap the one you'd rather play. That's the whole vote. Pick as many times as you like: every pick counts, and the pairs keep changing so every color gets its turn. If two colors are too close to call, Can't decide skips the pair.

The Results tab ranks each fighter's colors by how often they win when they're shown:

  • Win rate: a color scores (wins + 1) ÷ (times shown + 2). The +1 and +2 keep a color that has only been shown a couple of times from topping the list on one lucky pick.
  • Top 9: the 9 highest scores ship. Two colors that look almost the same won't both ship; the next color down takes the spot.
  • Exact ties: the color shown more goes first. If they're still tied, a fixed coin flip based on each color's ID decides, never their place in the list.

When voting closes, I go through the results and the colors people made, and make the final call.

Make a color: the Make a color tab recolors a fighter by part, or pulls the colors from a PalMod file or any image. Send it in with your name, and once I approve it, it joins the vote and goes head to head with everything else, credited to you.

The first version of the vote asked for all 9 colors at once. Those ballots are kept, but they aren't mixed into this count, because they measured something different.

What's public: each color's wins and times shown. A color you make isn't public until I approve it, and your name only appears next to an approved color. To keep it to one ballot per fighter per network, the vote server stores a scrambled code made from your network address.

68000 Assembly: How Holding Start (btst #7) Selects Slots 7–9 (00..00..08)

On CPS-2 hardware, bit #7 ($0080) of the player input word is the Start (ST) button. When confirming a character at $00C434 -> $3F4000, holding Start while pressing LP, MP, or HP adds 6 to the punch index (0..2 -> 6..8), storing 0..8 to $277(a0):
